Biographical Information for: Jim Myklebust, M. A.

Jim’s career in the areas of mental health and addictions treatment began over thirty five years ago, when he was asked to direct a community program for at risk youth in Dallas, Texas.  In 1979 Jim graduated from the University of Houston with a Masters Degree in Counseling.  He held appointments as an Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and faculty member in the School of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Texas Medical Branch Campus in Galveston, Texas.  He was a therapist in a community mental health center in rural southwestern Colorado, Clinical Director of a Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Team in Colorado and New Mexico, and an Employee Assistance Program Owner/Director there as well.  The EAP program that he started in 1989 is still in operation today.

In 1995, Jim was asked to help develop the first Out Patient Addictions Treatment Program for Cottonwood de Tucson, a residential addictions treatment center in Arizona.  At that time Jim was either certified or licensed as a therapist in Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico and a Certified Employee Assistance Professional.  In 1998, Jim began traveling into Canada and the Southwestern and Western US providing workshops to First Nations Communities addressing strategies for working with at risk and addicted youth.  This work ultimately led to Jim moving to Canada and working with Poundmaker’s Lodge Addictions Treatment Centre as their Clinical Supervisor.   Poundmaker’s is a 54 bed residential program and the oldest Aboriginal addictions treatment program in Canada

Beginning in 2005 and until Jim made the decision to move back to Tucson, Arizona, he served as the Executive Director of the Edmonton Drug Treatment and Community Restoration Court, one of six Drug Treatment Courts in Canada.  During that time he was also a part-time instructor at GrantMacEwan College in the Aboriginal Police Studies Program.

Throughout the last half of his career, Jim’s own spiritual path and personal recovery took shape and has grown to include participation in 12-step support group meetings and traditional spiritual practices.

Jim is extremely grateful to be a part of the team at Ocean Rehab.  He believes that all addicts and alcoholics that want help should have access to quality addictions treatment programming in a safe, secure and beautiful environment without costing the individual or family a small fortune.  Ocean Rehab is all of that and more.
